INHERITED STYLE - Dressed to Arrive

This project was genuinely exciting for me — and I say that because it was actually the first time I have ever played the part of a Caribbean man. Because there is a side of Caribbean style that people rarely talk about — the conservative side. The aspirational side. The side that says: dress to show that you are a respectable person, that you are someone of status, that children can look at you and want to grow up to be just like you. The short sleeve. The lean. The patternation, which is not particularly British at all. It is very much Caribbean. You do not need bright colours to carry your culture. Sometimes it speaks through the cut. Introduced the scarf as a nod to the dandy, to that more complex, layered Caribbean identity — one that is diverse, culturally adaptive, and has contributed enormously to the countries we have made home. To be Caribbean is to be all of that. Not the happy-go-lucky stereotype sitting under a mango tree. Something far richer than that.
