INHERITED STYLE - Wob Dwiyet

Category

Year

I wore the Wob Dwiyet — the national dress of the Commonwealth of Dominica. It wasn't a casual choice. I wore it the day I received an award from Queen Elizabeth, for my work as founder of the Dominica Dementia Foundation. Since then, it has come with me to cultural events, to the Dominica High Commission. Staying connected to Dominican culture is something I do consciously, every single day. I have four Dominican flags in my home. I have a Madras hat, a lanyard, and a flag pin I take into international spaces. When I put it on, something shifts. I feel confident, I feel proud, you feel part of history. On the day of the shoot, we were surrounded by colour and energy; it felt exactly right. It represents me. It represents my country. It represents everything I stand for. Everything around me, the things I wear, the events I attend, the work I do professionally — it all comes back to the same question: how do I keep the Caribbean close? How do I make sure it stays part of who I am?
