INHERITED STYLE - Madras Fabric

I chose to bring a piece of Madras Fabric to the shoot. It is the traditional dress of Saint Lucia and across the Caribbean, and I love it because it tells the story of our people so beautifully. It comes from Chennai in India — which used to be called Madras, hence the name — then travelled through Portugal, through Africa, and arrived in the Caribbean islands. When I look at Madras, I see that entire journey. I see people who have migrated for so long, whether forcibly or by choice. The fabric itself holds that history. That is why I always have a piece of it with me — a scarf, a detail, something. For a long time I was deeply, deeply anti-Britishness. My mother had instilled in me that I was Saint Lucian, not British. It wasn't until I was around twenty that I realised — actually, honey, you are both. Unpacking that, realigning myself, understanding what it means to live in a diaspora body — it has been unsettling at times. But now I am very proud and very confident in the fact that I am a diaspora baby of so many different cultures and experiences.
