INHERITED STYLE - The Costume

I am very proud to be half Ghanaian and half Trinidadian. The outfit I wore is a powerful and unapologetic visual statement of that pride. I designed it myself using recycled materials — scraps — because for me, there is a real beauty in transformation, in turning something discarded into something meaningful. It mirrors our story as a people: one of resilience, creativity and rebirth. Every piece tells a story of who we are and where we come from. The work that first connected me to Caribbean culture was costume. I joined a mas camp at Notting Hill Carnival at the age of seven, and it was in that environment that I was first encouraged to express myself — to tell stories through what I wore. That was the catalyst. Everything I have made since, everything that infuses Caribbean culture into my creative work, traces back to that moment. Wear your heritage with pride, whether that's through your art, your voice, or simply how you show up in the world. Caribbean identity is powerful, it's diverse and it's ever evolving. There is no single way to express it. It's just about owning our story unapologetically.
